Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."
I remember starting Pride and Prejudice a few years ago, and I also fully remember how it took me a year to finish it. This was also the time I decided to finally start annotating.
I didn’t really know what to expect, given all I had going for me was Matthew Macfadyen’s hand stretch from the 2005 film (please spare me, I didn’t know any better). I don’t think I’ve read anything more focused on character before this, but I was glad I stuck to it because I get it now.
Eventually, when the time is right, I will revisit the Bennets. For now, I have the rest of Austen’s works to look forward to.
